Costume Details

The Auxiliary Territorial Service started in 1917 as the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps which was a voluntary service. The WAAC was disbanded in 1921 but prior to WW2 the British Government could see there was going to be a need for women to take up the jobs they so excellently performed in WW1. These jobs initially were office based, cooks, telephonists and admin, little did they know that within a couple of years the ATS would be performing more involved and dangerous jobs. The uniform here is that of the rank of a Private and consists of full uniform, jacket, skirt, shirt, tie, belt and hat. Due to fabric shortages and the struggle to keep up with demand, women were given smaller men’s tunics which had already been made and were slightly tweaked to fit the female shape, this is why you often see them fasten left over right, the mans way of fastening. There is the option of adding a gas mask bag, although today the gas mask is not a necessity but your mobile and lipstick are!

The Outfit – consists of uniform jacket, skirt, shirt, tie, belt and hat.

The Tunic – is the rank of a Private, it is slightly fitted into the waist, the matching belt can pull it in more if needed.

The Shirt – is a British Army tan shirt and British Army wool ribbon style tie.

The Skirt –is an A line style skirt in the matching khaki barathea wool.

The Hat – is also made of the Khaki barathea wool with a soft peak, it is a copy of an original.

The Bag –is an original WW2 Gas mask bag with an adjustable strap.

The Fabric –The uniform and cap are made from khaki Barathea wool, the shirt is cotton, the tie wool and the bag is a khaki canvas
